Infertility
The emotional pain women experience when going through infertility can be severe and traumatic. Research has shown that anxiety and depression rates in women with infertility are similar to those with a cancer diagnosis. Infertility is often accompanied by sadness, guilt, and shame, and communication and intimacy issues with a partner can suffer as a result.
Pregnancy Loss
Pregnancy loss is never part of a woman’s vision of how she will become a mother. Along with losing the baby, the woman may lose her sense-of-self, and feelings of sadness, guilt, and shame can cause communication and intimacy issues with her partner. The grief with pregnancy loss can be particularly difficult because the loss may not be openly acknowledged, or publicly mourned, making it more difficult to process. Even subsequent successful pregnancies may be characterized by fear of another loss.
