Depression is a mood disorder affecting more than 18 million adults in any given year*. While depression is most often associated with extreme sadness, depression manifests in other ways including:
- Feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness
- Negative self-talk
- A sense of isolation
- Depressed mood, or just feeling down
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Less interest or pleasure in activities you’ve always enjoyed
- Loss of energy
- Fatigue
- Moving and/or thinking more slowly than usual
- Difficulty concentrating
- Thoughts of death or suicide
Depression has been linked to genetics, life stressors, trauma, seasonal changes, and childbirth, as in post-partum depression. In some people, depressed moods may be followed by feelings of elation and euphoria, as with bipolar disorder.
